Community Care Southern Sydney offers several types of community care:

  • Help at Home
  • Extended care at home for people with dementia
  • Assistance for older people who are homeless or in insecure housing
  • Greenwood Cottage day centre

Help at Home

Our Help at Home programs (or 'Community Aged Care Packages') assist older people who need considerable support in order to stay living at home. 

A coordinator visits the person at home to discuss what sort of services would suit them best. Trained careworkers then provide a range of services designed for each individual based on their particular needs. This can include help with, for example, having a shower, getting dressed, meals, laundry, shopping, transport, home maintenance, gardening or social activities. The services provided are very flexible and can change as the person's needs change.

 Eligibility
People who have been assessed as eligible for a Community Aged Care Package (CACP) by an Aged Care Assessment Team. To contact your closest Aged Care Assessment Team, ask your GP, ring your local public hospital or ring Carelink on 1800 052 022.
 Where Canterbury, Hurstville, Kogarah and Rockdale local government areas.
 Fees For people on a full age pension, fees are set at 17.5% of the pension. However individual circumstances are taken into account. People on higher incomes may be asked to pay an additional amount.
 Languages Several of our coordinators and careworkers speak languages other than English. If needed, interpreters can be organised. 
 Funding Australian Department of Health and Ageing.
 Enquiry If you already have an approval from an Aged Care Assessment Team contact them to enquire about being referred to The Benevolent Society.

Extended care at home for people with dementia (EACH-D)

This service assists older people with dementia whose health and behaviour is such that they would otherwise need high level care in a nursing home or hostel. 

A coordinator visits the person at home to discuss with them and their family or carer which particular combination of services would suit them best. Trained careworkers can provide help with having a shower, getting dressed, nursing care, medication, incontinence, meals, transport, social activities, organising doctors’ visits, advice on managing difficult behaviour etc. The services can change as the person’s needs change. Clients are also be helped to obtain other health and support services that they may need.

 Eligibility
People who have been assessed as eligible for Extended Aged Care at Home-Dementia (EACH-D) by an Aged Care Assessment Team. To contact your closest Aged Care Assessment Team, ask your GP or ring Carelink on 1800 052 022.

Assistance for older people who are homeless or in insecure housing (ACHA Program)

This service helps frail older people who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. 

Our coordinator helps clients find affordable, secure housing and obtain immediate health and care services. Long-term support is then organised, if needed. This could include, for example, household help, nursing support, meals on wheels, transport and personal care. Through a partnership with the Department of Housing and St George Community Housing Association some clients are monitored and supported long term.

 Eligibility Low income, frail older people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Greenwood Cottage

A cottage where frail older people can go for the day offering companionship, bus trips to places of interest and other group activities. It operates Monday - Wednesday and Friday. A meal is provided and a bus can pick up clients from home.

 Eligibility Frail older people living at home.
 Where The cottage is in Bexley. The service is available for people who live in Hurstville, Kogarah or Rockdale local government areas.
 Fees $12, includes lunch.
 Funding NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care and Australian Government, through the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program.
